Notes on iOS update 1.0.6 and Android
By Jason on December 16, 2016

When I began work on the iOS version of Happy Wheels, I questioned whether or not it would be accepted into the App Store at all. I found examples of bleeding limbs, gibs, blood explosions and screams in iOS games, but no one example seemed to put all these effects together like Happy Wheels does. Also, at the time, the App Store guidelines were intentionally vague in places, "What is objectionable content? We know it when we see it." So I submitted our little game and breathed a sigh of relief when it was accepted with a 12+ age rating.

However, the App Store and its guidelines are living, breahting entities that change over time. Eventually one of our updates was reviewed by someone who felt the violence was not "cartoon/fantasy", but "realistic", requiring an age rating of 17+ (and banishment from the Brazilian App Store–Sorry, Brazil!). We didn't love this as many Happy Wheels players are below the age of 17, but we went along with it and really nothing seemed to change. Goody.

But then the App Store issued an objection which was not as easily remedied: inury to Irresponsible Dad's child. We were always a bit concerned that this might be an issue and if so, how would we work around it? We ended up going with the obvious solution which was to disable injury to the child. Before anyone throws their arms up in angry protest, I suggest you try it. The child can fall off the bike and will ragdoll, but always remains intact. If you find this lack of violence utterly offensive, let us know. We're considering an alternate solution.

Because of the aforementioned changes, it was easy to implement the option to remove blood/gore from all characters. This option can be found in the Option > Advanced Options. This was request made by a few people... very few.

With that out of the way, the update 1.0.6 also includes levels 1-5 for Wheelchair Guy.

I am actively working on the Android version. After other solutions failed, I decided to go with a pure C++ rewrite of the code. This is unfortunately the best, but slowest solution. At this point, I've got the base characters working as well as couple of the vehicles. It's a good start, but it's still a ways off. Sorry about that. I'd give a more specific timeframe, but I would be guessing and probably inaccurately.

Hello you are cool !
By Bert on August 07, 2017

@TheBlueJay123: There isn't anything that can be done about it. Esc is required to exit full-screen Flash content and cannot be overridden as far as I know. Changing it to Tab was the only option. Pressing Tab while in the game shouldn't change focus to anything else, as the game should be taking control of keyboard input.

cuando sacaran happy wheels para android y porfavor que se pueda jugar con teclado
By TheBlueJay123 on August 05, 2017

I hate the pause thing, big screen is glitchy and I wouldn't have to play in big screen if the pause thing wasn't changed to tab. Why is it set to tab anyway? And you should make a way to change the keybindings because its ridiculous and annoying because I can't do tab-R in small screen because it moves the computers focus to something else. So I have to click reset with my mouse. Why you do this?

By oscario3 on July 07, 2017

@D J A Y: I know I would. Especially if it would light up another spark of interest from people, encouraging Jim to not give up on Happy Wheels yet. I think it would probably do pretty well if he put it on steam, just look at what happened to the app!
By D J A Y on July 07, 2017

Real Question If happy wheels 2 comes out...will any of you actually be interested in it?
By Bert on July 07, 2017

@Joman66: That is awesome! It's interesting to see how many of us have stuck around this whole time.

I love this game, the concept and design are great. The only reason it isn't as popular (anymore) is because it feels like it has been abandoned. The only hope is that a lot of stuff is happening behind the scenes, but I fear the worst.
By xxX_mr_fier_Xxx on July 05, 2017

Yes! Finally! Android version!
By ACHIEVERjunior on July 03, 2017

Oh the times they are a-changin'
By Joman66 on July 03, 2017

@Bert (and folks after).. my twin brother's account is the 26th account to be made on this website while mine is the 1867th! Brother: Me: I remember when grabbing in the game was based on timing rather than holding down to "glue" grab.
By Bert on July 02, 2017

@Mystic: Yeah, you have a point. Seeing some news on the sequel would be nice. In terms of YouTubers ruining it, that's just how it is nowadays. You can't make something popular without a cringeworthy fanbase spawning and people seeing it as a free revenue train for them. Think of the millions these clickbait "YouTubers" have made off Happy Wheels, and I doubt a cent went to helping Jim with anything. I can't even do anything on here anymore because the admin site is dead.
By Mystic on July 02, 2017

They ruined it like they ruined Minecraft. Anyone remember playing that game during pre-alpha? Jim's stance on Happy Wheels is probably the same as Notch's on Minecraft. It's just a source of free money at this point. Bert, maybe the sequel? I feel YouTubers have lost interest in Happy Wheels at this point so if that game ever gets released the community won't go to **** (if there will be a community).
By D J A Y on July 02, 2017

Let's not even mention characters like santa, pogo stick man and heli copter guy...there's literally hundreds of other characters that could have been added and why not work with the community to build the game?...
By D J A Y on July 02, 2017

@Mystic?Youtubers ruined it?...I mean all they did was advertise the game more...Jim could've found many ways to counterract the shitty levels and spam.I mean happy wheels isn't the only game in the world that gives kids freedom to make levels...The game wasnt updated enough to keep people interested

By oscario3 on June 30, 2017

Tbh I'm still waiting for happy wheels 2... Naïve, I know.
By Bert on June 30, 2017

Hey, Mystic, you live. Yeah, the game's probably dead by now, but why are we still here? Maybe we're clinging onto some sort of hope that something will change.
By Tj6767676 on June 29, 2017

omg get off your high horse you sociopaths. Does it really make the game "Go to ****" if instead of being beheaded and splattering blood everywhere, a child just dies? And when did it become some sort of status symbol as to when you created your account? This is the problem with gamers! They can't do this crap themselves but are perfectly willing to s*** on something that a guy spent 7 YEARS creating and all of the sudden it's s*** because people besides you enjoy it? Oh the nerve! This concludes my rant.
By Mystic on June 28, 2017

This game died the day YouTube Let's Players started cashing out on it. Originally when it was first released it was **** by the people of Newgrounds, /v/, reddit and other forums where the average age wasn't in the prepubescent range. They played it and made levels for it since they knew it was an amazing and well executed concept. Everything was great about it, the perfectionist vector art, the gore, the hilariously surreal characters and the amazing physics. And because of the user generated nature of the game all it needed was a good playerbase and it would be perfect.
By Mystic on June 28, 2017

They ruined it. This amazing game which had taken 6 years to make was soon flooded by millions of immature children because unoriginal YouTube let’s players had struck gold on it. UberHaxorNova was the first guy to capitalize on the game and oh boy did the quality of the maps deteriorate when he started making his videos. Thousands of shitty levels made by children describing their love for this guy started to appear and the overall maturity of the playerbase started to dwindle. Older players began quitting since they couldn’t bare being surrounded by hoards of preschoolers with ADHD. There were so many children that the site stopped working 60% of the time for years, presumably because Jim didn’t know how to index a database or write any kind of backend code. This was only the beginning. Soon, more cringy YouTubers like PewDiePie, Tobuscus and JackSepticEye built their channels on the back of this game.
By Mystic on June 28, 2017

At this point the game was dying. There were maybe a couple updates a year, to serve the tiny bit of the playerbase who actually had any appreciation for them but that was it. Today it is completely dead. Anyone who gives any **** about it has left. It’s only purpose is to make Jim ad revenue as he gives no fucks about it either anymore. And it’s all thanks to YouTubers who built their channels on the back of this game, killing it in the process.
